Tietz Fundamentals of Clinical Chemistry, 6th edition. Article · Info & Metrics · PDF The book is essentially based on the larger Tietz Textbook of Clinical.
These particularities combined with informative tables and instructive figures in a 2-color design make it easy for beginners to follow the clearly arranged topics. Review questions in an appendix allow everyone to make a self-assessment of the acquired knowledge, which is facilitated by resources for students and lecturers on an additional Evolve website.
The first 3 parts 16 chapters include chapters on evidence-based laboratory medicine and principles of laboratory analyses, with notes on reference materials, specimen collection processes, and preanalytical variables.
In addition to the description of the conventional analytical techniques in the clinical laboratory optical, electrochemical, chromatographic, electrophoretic, immunochemical, and enzymatic techniques , the principles of mass spectrometry, point-of-care testing, and automation in the laboratory are discussed.
Concepts of the analytical evaluation of methods, the establishment of reference intervals, and the management of quality are compiled. Unfortunately, the important chapter on the clinical evaluation of laboratory results such as receiver-operation characteristics presented in the textbook was not included in this shorter volume.
The various analytes nucleic acids, amino acids and proteins, enzymes, tumor markers, creatinine, urea, uric acid, carbohydrates, lipids, lipoproteins, electrolytes and blood gases, hormones, catecholamines and serotonin, vitamins and trace elements, hemoglobin, iron, and bilirubin, and porphyrins are presented with discussion of either their biochemistry, clinical significance, and analytical methodology or their properties as analytes, including changes in relation to diseases, affected organ systems, or biochemical disorders.
In future, however, I expect that the transition of clinical chemistry from an analytical to a more functionally orientated discipline of medicine will surely lead to giving up such artificial separation and to combining both sections in a uniform presentation with the focus on clinical interpretation. In summary, I warmly recommend this book as a comprehensive overview of modern clinical chemistry.
It contains very user-friendly teaching material for students of human medicine, natural sciences, and laboratory technology, all of whom should be trained in clinical chemistry.
For clinicians the book is also a useful source of background information for discussions of clinical problems with laboratory staff.
Clinical laboratory scientists, however, should prefer the original, larger textbook. No authors declared any potential conflicts of interest. Skip to main content.
