I know, I know—I could have just practiced actual human interaction, but that seemed like a lot of work. I don't know exactly what I was expecting from David J. Lieberman's book. If I had bothered to read beyond th I spend the majority of my time working with computers, and with the exception of a system glitch here and there we computers and I get along pretty well.
My Findings I'm no social savant, nor am I a behavioral psychologist, but I do know quite a bit about the scientific method, and a thing or two about being sketched out by weirdos. So, with those credentials in mind, I'm gonna tell you that this book is rife with horrible advice and some seriously distorted views on the application of statistically-significant findings of experimental studies in real life.
The Pen and The Gorn In a man by the name of Gerald Gorn published a study that, in essence, showed that a given participant in said study was more likely to choose a pen that had been paired with pleasant music than one that had not. Basically, it was good old classical conditioning in action, which set off a storm of excitement about using music in advertising. Master comms 60 Programmes. Load cell.

It takes a lot of education to understand the delicate and seemingly arbitrary initially relationship of various psychological 'variables' and to then be able to use it while you are in the middle of a situation.
This books gives you a good introduction into profiling people. It gives a framework for understanding people at an understandable level, with various tactics to use. But do not expect it to make you a super-profiler. Only practice with the willingness to see your knowledge as flawed at some point with make you superb at reading people. In other words, you get the skills to practice, but you do not learn how to use the skills well.

Feb 28, Jill rated it really liked it Shelves: I wasn't all that impressed with the first few chapters, but after that, I thought it was fascinating, perceptive, and dead on. This book is jam-packed with information considering its small size. So much comes at you at once that it is much better to read several times; otherwise you can't retain the information, which is really the whole point. This is really worth your time.

Excellent book. The author is clearly very smart and his techniques on reading people and why they do things is genius. His techniques will help you in your business and personal life no matter what your profession is. However, the information in the book comes at you fast and it is difficult to retain what you have read. But it is still and excellent read and a great book for reference. Mar 14, Meg Coulson rated it did not like it. Seem to me like some of the tactics described in the book require that YOU fool, lie to, or take advantage of another person. Not my cup of tea.
May 20, Hamidreza rated it it was ok. Jul 04, Rosemarie rated it it was amazing. This was a very interesting and informative book. I think this psychology of "reading" people is what is used by police and FBI in questioning suspects. But, the author shows you how it can apply to everyday situations. You may need to reread some parts to get everything he is saying, because it's a lot of info. The main idea that I got is that human behavior is more predictable than you think, and all behavior hinges on a few factors.
If you learn these factors, you can predict with some degree This was a very interesting and informative book. If you learn these factors, you can predict with some degree of accuracy what someone will do in a given situation. The big factor seems to be self-esteem. You can have two people in the exact same situation but if one has low-self esteem and the other has higher self-esteem, the outcome will be VERY different.
This was a big insight for me. I guess what I learned from this book is that most of the people in my life have had very LOW self-esteem. In many cases, I already knew that, but I didn't realize how it would play out in their treatment of me.
My level of self-esteem is good. BUT people often read me very, very wrong and that has been a big problem as well. This brings me to the one area of this book where I am uneasy.
It's not an exact science. The things that people look for to determine high or low self esteem, truth or dishonesty, confidence or lack of confidence, might vary from one individual to the next. I do think that what is normal is slanted toward people who are Extroverts.
An Extroverted person may be extra nervous only if she's lying. But an Introvert, might be nervous for various other reasons, BUT telling the truth the whole time. But I did learn a lot from this book. Hopefully, what I learned will go a long way toward helping me sort out future relationships.
