Do different CPUs think differently? But, what if instead, the instructor just stops there. No further explanation is given, no depth of material is discussed, and your entire discussion ends at "Computers use CPUs to think. The brevity with which topics are covered causes confusion and does little to help the reader in actually learning the topics presented.
In addition to the above, the book is riddled with errors! They're usually small, but wrong is wrong and if you're just learning the subject for the first time, this can become extremely disorienting and frustrating. One person found this helpful. I bought this book as a recommendation to dust off my rusty knowledge of the subject.
I used to teach networking when it was new on NT 4. To my surprise this book is from about that time in concepts. But, what bothers me the most is the unbelievable amount of typos, specially around bitmasks, network addresses and subnets specification. The coverage of the subjects is barely introductory and most of the time you are punted to a fore coming chapter for a more detailed explanation, that never happens.

The books goes on for pages discussing the differences between 10baseT and baseT networking, in an era when baseT is the lagging edge of networking and enterprises are building Gigabit and 10G fiber and copper networking.
Case in point, the text near Location on the Kindle edition insists that Cross-over cables are required for switch to switch connections. In Gigabit networks, there is no longer any "cross-over" considering that Gigabit is Fully Duplexed and Auto-sensing. A sad state of affairs for an otherwise excellent book that purports to have been published less than a year ago. It's a good book. I kept trying to learn the CCNA1 book, and getting hung up and stuck.
This book seems to cram too much in with just a brief overview so that you're sometimes left still wondering what the heck is going on. Overall, it's a good essentials overview book, though. A bit better for dummies like me. This book covers some very useful information in an easy to understand format without being too basic or being too complicated.
I learned a lot from it. It was sort of pure luck when I came upon this book -just from browsing online networking book. It turned out to be a very good book if you need to understand networking foundation. However, as some readers noted..
