On that same page, Manoloff defined the three principal chords of a key. You know, the Tonic, Sub-Dominant, and the Dominant. For some reason, he felt the need to use the analogy of Owner, Assistant Superintindent, and Superintindent as helpful reminders of the principal chords.
Beginning on page 53, and running until page 62, was the good stuff.
Every few measures, a scale was inserted to connect one chord to another — again in the manner of Lang or Lucas. Included with book one, was a paper chord guide wheel, which taught the circle of fifths, and the principal chords of each key.
It was a useful learning tool, and I have seen grey, and pink, versions of the wheel.
