Jul 30, Shannon rated it really liked it Recommends it for: Brit chick lit lovers. One nice thing about Marian Keyes' books is that all of her characters feel like real people that you might meet on the street.
And the consequences for their actions are also "real". In this novel, three women are looking for love and success.
First there is the super-fashionista, Lisa, who feels she has been demoted at work by being sent to Dublin, Ireland to head up a new women's fashion magazine. During this time of extreme stress, she is also in the midst of a divorce with her fashion-photo One nice thing about Marian Keyes' books is that all of her characters feel like real people that you might meet on the street. During this time of extreme stress, she is also in the midst of a divorce with her fashion-photographer husband, whom she still loves.
The second woman, Ashling, is hired to be the assistant editor of this maagazine. She is nick-named "little miss fix-it" due to her life-long habit of trying to "mother" people and fix their lives.
She becomes involved with a stand-up comedien, but she can't decide whether she loves him, or loves the idea of him. The third woman is Clodagh, long-time best friend of Ashling, who is currently an ineffective mother of two young children.
Clodaugh is ealizing that she has given up her life to make her family members live's comfortable, meanwhile, she is having a personal breakdown. Interesting and fun read.
Apparently this was my first Marian Keyes book. On Tuesday, April 05, I wrote on bookcrossing. This meant I was going to send her this book I did not really know what to expect but actually I am liking it so far. I have read about pages.
I will update this journal while reading more. Update april 16 I totally forgot to update Finished the book and I thought it was a fun read. I am Apparently this was my first Marian Keyes book. I am sure planning to read more by Marian Keyes. It is light reading and really a book out of this time. Jan 06, Erin rated it it was ok. I got through this book. Getting into it was a bit of a struggle It's certainly not a deep book, in my opinion, and I could go for a book like that every now and then, so it wasn't a loss.
Definitely very much a chick book not necessarily a bad thing, just not typically my thing. Jan 21, Covadonga Lopez Iglesias rated it it was amazing.
I loved the book. It's such a nice story; so contemporary and real that could happen to any woman these days. Her lively writing style and her awesome humor is outstanding. Reading a book of Marian is like talking to your best friend at home. I always think she and I could get along excellent with each other.
May 29, Kim rated it it was amazing. I loved this book - it is funny but sweet in some ways. I have read most of Keyes' books and this is one of her best ones I think. Not great literature but catches your interest and love the Ireland settings.
Nov 1- I just re read - I love this book and listening to it is good also. View 2 comments. Sep 17, Marie rated it really liked it Shelves: Oct 30, Amanda rated it it was amazing. Love Marian Keyes books. I have read and collected all of her books. They are well written, easy to read and witty. Laugh out loud moments in all of her books. Mar 22, Ashley Wells rated it liked it. I graded on the curve since this came out in , the same year as The Devil Wears Prada and only a few years out from Bridget Jones Diary.
So I can't exactly ding it for relying on tropes of chick-lit that are now overused to the point of being cliches, since the genre was still in its infancy or at least its toddlerhood. Overall this is a sweet, funny book that is mostly very lighthearted but also touches on some serious issues in ways I found pretty respectful though I have never been hom I graded on the curve since this came out in , the same year as The Devil Wears Prada and only a few years out from Bridget Jones Diary.
Overall this is a sweet, funny book that is mostly very lighthearted but also touches on some serious issues in ways I found pretty respectful though I have never been homeless or had a mental illness so I'm not exactly qualified to judge. My main issue is the length - there is absolutely no reason this book needs to be pages long.
The middle section is extremely repetitive, basically cycling through scenes where 1 Clodagh is bored and restless, 2 Lisa is bored and bitchy, and 3 Ashling is obsessed with Marcus even though she's not sure she likes him.
Keyes or her editor could have cut at least fifty pages from this section without losing anything. Similarly, the book plays really fast and loose with the limited third-person narrator, switching characters many times in each chapter and using the device to just tell us what a character is thinking when we don't always need to know, or when those thoughts could be communicated via action instead of explanation. The plot-related issue I had is a bit of a spoiler so proceed at your own risk: And instead she's a monster, and the book tries to make it seem like her monstrousness was foregrounded because she stole Dylan her future husband from Ashling all those years before so we should have expected this, and now she's going to get her comeuppance and we're going to enjoy it.
I was just really uncomfortable with how quickly she became horrible and how much pleasure the book seems to take in her downfall. Number one internationally bestselling author Marian Keyes works her magic once again in this charming tale of three modern women and their search for happiness.
Apparently I missed this magic. No more jet-setting to the fall collections. No more fabulous parties and photographs in the society pages. So why, lately, has Clodagh had a recurring urge to kiss a frog — sleep with a frog, if truth be told?
I disagree All the characters annoyed me to some degree and I just found the book boring. So ready to move on to our next read. I did not enjoy this at all. I rate this book a 1 of 5 stars.
I have read a couple of Marian's other books which I really enjoyed and whilst this book was ok I felt that it didn't have the same impact as her other books. Her other books that I have read covered difficult topics and had a lot more drama than this book. In places this book moved very slowly. We follow 3 main characters; Lisa, Ashling and Clodagh. I really didn't like Lisa and I had no sympathy for Clodagh. Lisa had moved from a very glamourous magazine to Dublin and she wasn't happy as she was hoping to get promoted to New York. Lisa was really horrible to her work colleagues and I couldn't feel any sympathy as she came across as being really spoilt and entitiled. Clodagh was married and had two children and seemed to have a really good live but she cheated on her husband. In my eyes this is always bad and I had no sympathy when she finally got caught.
For me this book was just ok. It was quite slow in places and perhaps longer than it needed to be. It was an enjoyable read and I am glad I can finally take it off my TBR as it had been on it for over 2 years. I think this shows my feelings for this book, I wanted to read it because I knew it would be an enjoyable quick read but it wasn't something that I was excited for.
Sushi for Beginners: Mar 20 21 21 Mar 30, Readers Also Enjoyed. About Marian Keyes. Marian Keyes. I would highly recommend this to anyone who enjoys 'chick lit' or Marian Keyes' other books. Mass Market Paperback Verified download. After not being totally impressed with the first Marian Keyes book I had read, I was a little hesitant to begin this one.
I love this book! There are a couple of main characters and each has such a different personality and different obstacles in their life. It's funny how each person's life changes from what they learn from each other. This is a long book but worth every second you spending reading it. Some of the characters work in a new high fashion magazine, some are comics trying to make it and some are friends and relatives from the sidelines.
The three main women in the book: Ashling is an ordinary girl with a compassionate and difficult past due to her mother is just trying to get by minimally in the magazine world, Lisa is the high flying editor knocking everyone over on her way to the top, including her parents and her husband, and Clodaugh the picture of a perfect life who is unhappy and bored with her life.
Each person learns something from the others and their relationships change with the mistakes they make and the lessons they learn. It's a very good book! I don't think the way the story is told allows you to have any real empathy of the characters.
Lisa is too mean for you to care about, Ashling to much of a doormat and Clodagh is way to spoiled and selfish. Icouldn't care about these people because I didn't like them. I kep asking myself questions like: If Lisa wants to be with Oliver, why does she keep acting like such a fool and what does she gain by being so awful to everyone around her?
Why would Ashling keep Clodagh as a close friend after she had already betrayed their friendship by helping herself to her friends boy friend?
Mind you, I'm not saying you should ignore the man's part, but what kind of friend has so little respect for you that she would do this, and why would you want her in your life after she's done this? Why is Ashling such a door mat? I even put this book down and picked up Babyville great book so I could try to get back into it. Alas, by the end of this book I was just glad it was over, now I'm waiting for her next one.
I hope it's better than this. See all reviews. site Giveaway allows you to run promotional giveaways in order to create buzz, reward your audience, and attract new followers and customers.
