Stone and C. The Arthritis Foundation in America publishes this reasonably priced textbook with support from the drug company GlaxoSmithKline. Its goal is to be a general rheumatology textbook used by both students and clinicians.
It has a remit to be a concise but thorough description of current science, clinical and management issues in rheumatology, and it is planned that it will be updated regularly. The textbook originates in the publications of the American Committee for the Control of Rheumatism in It comes in one volume and is in paperback form.
It is divided into 50 chapters, which are all written by different specialist contributors.
The first chapter covers the social and economic consequences of rheumatic disease. This is a concise summary of the economic impact of having a rheumatic disease. The following five chapters cover the anatomical, histological, biochemical, immunological and genetic aspects of the musculoskeletal system.
These chapters are a very good introduction to joint anatomy and physiology, as well as to the basic science of the mechanisms underlying the pathological disease processes in rheumatology. There are sections on evaluation and investigations of the patient, including laboratory, arthroscopy and imaging. Specific rheumatological diseases are then given their own chapters.
The chapters on specific diseases give enough background but are concise, so that more reading from other sources will be needed. Chapters then follow on rehabilitation, psychology, patient education, pain management, injections, drug therapies, operative treatment, and complementary and alternative therapies.
Tables are printed in pink. It is recommended for anyone wanting a concise textbook in one volume. Oxford University Press is a department of the University of Oxford.
