However, this does not make the book feel incomplete; Penn's performances can attest to that. The book is high quality and in color with photos showing 2 angles for every shot. Every sequence is laid out well, leaving little room for This is a well laid out book that bills itself as the Book of Knowledge. Every sequence is laid out well, leaving little room for confusion. Penn's basic approaches to mixed martial arts. I've found that these Victory Belt publications, such as this book and Eddie Bravo's "Mastering the Rubber Guard," are the only way to go.
The full-color, detailed photos are easy on the eyes and easy to understand, as opposed to the scant black and white photos used in more budget-oriented instructionals.
One thing I really like is how Penn lays out more options than just standing, clinch, and the va This is a fantastic, comprehensive guide to B. One thing I really like is how Penn lays out more options than just standing, clinch, and the various ground positions.
Whole sections are devoted to approaching and attacking a grounded opponent, and vice versa.
On top of that, Penn actually shows transitions, especially combining striking with takedowns, something sorely lacking in other notable instructional works, even Bas Rutten's Big DVDs of Combat. On the downside, his ground section is surprisingly basic. Maybe I'm spoiled by reading "Mastering the Rubber Guard," with it being a book of similar size covering solely bottom ground positions, but i already knew the majority of Pen's submission section, which kind of caught me off guard.
For one uninitiated, though, it would be perfect. All in all, as comprehensive as a single book can be. It covers a LOT, but that may not even be a hindrance. I'm very satisfied with it. Jan 07, Garrett Bryant rated it liked it Shelves: BJ Penn is one of my favorite fighters and who I view as the best assimilation of multiple martial arts into fighting today. His fluid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu with excellent wrestling and natural striking make him one of the best fighters today.
I was very excited when his book was released and couldn't wait to download it. This book is very technical. Great for in the gym working out and practicing and learning new moves, but as for a good read, not so much. The transitions between chapters and philosoph BJ Penn is one of my favorite fighters and who I view as the best assimilation of multiple martial arts into fighting today.
The transitions between chapters and philosophies and fighting styles needed some improvement, but his concepts and techniques are superior to anything else I have ever seen regarding the integration of multiple fighting styles.
Jan 23, Pierre rated it really liked it Shelves: Great resource for anyone wanting to learn commonly used MMA techniques. The book helped me to understand the sport. It is very detailed and an easy read.
The pictures explain exactly what Penn writes. Overall, a very good book. I would have given this book 5 stars, but he neglected to explain kicking and some other techniques.
Dec 13, Edward rated it liked it. A book by him about lots of stuff in MMA. Feb 22, Doug rated it really liked it. I'm no MMA fighter, and received this as a gift, but it has been surprisingly useful to me for some BJJ no-gi technique. BJ has a clear writing style and makes use of many photos to illustrate various techniques.

It has opened my eyes on how to better blend the different styles together and it is from one of the truly great fighters of our time.
It will always be in my library, where other books will come and go. Very good book that covers a great deal.
Very honestly done. Penn doesn't try to put it as the only way it is done, but it his his way. And for you to implement your own techniques along with what you may use from this book to formulate your own system. His strike to takedown is very good along with fighting against the cage also. You can tell it is from someone teaching by experience and constantly reminds the reader that only by practice and repetition can the techniques be executed.
It is indeed a book of knowledge. But wisdom is knowledge applied which can only be done through practice, practice and more practice! This book is absolutely amazing!!!!
Verified download: Yes Condition: I love the way everything transitions to the next move and especially the ground game. He shows punches or submissions from every position which I love because you can always be attacking. I definitely recommend.
