So when one comes around, even a re-release, a good guide is very important.
I've had ups and downs with the reissue of Final Fantasy guides recently. That being that Prima has, for the most part, just copied and pasted Bradygames guides but usually hasn't added any discernable updates to them.
So when I ordered this one I thought they'd just do another cut and paste job and mostly mention the new additions The errors of the previous publication have been fixed and addressed and it's actually quite comprehensive when it comes to the new stuff. First, the guide as a whole. It's got a nice hardcover that has some good artwork on the inside covers. It also begins with a nice foreward and introduction that invites new players to explore Final Fantasy XII and welcomes returning players back for a whole new experience.
There's a quick list of what's new. It doesn't need to go too indepth on this and it doesn't. Chances are you've already read about these differences on various websites already. They've been a huge part of the marketing campaign. That being said, though, when it does dive into the basics of Final Fantasy XII it's actually more helpful than ever. I haven't forgotten much about the game over the years, but the guide did go out of its way to makes the games systems less intimidating.
In particular, there's more depth here on how the battle system works. Something the previous publication of the guide in didn't spend as much time with.
In particular, how gambits are covered here is given a far more thorough explanation by showing sample setups and explaining how they'll function. Final Fantasy XII is a complex game and this guide makes it much simpler to understand. The guide also takes a great deal of time to go indepth on the Zodiac job system.
Unlike when the Final Fantasy X remaster guide was published where there was just a mere mention of the extra sphere grid, this guide has an entire section that's 35 pages long dedicated to just talking about the Zodiac job system.
It gives a nice introduction, explains how it works before breaking down its components. It might seem dense at first but it's not too taxing to read about if you're new or unfamiliar with it. The guide then jumps into each job class, giving a profile of the job, showing the license board and telling you about it before recommending a character to take the job. If you need a quick breakdown of how to assign jobs and who needs to get what esper to unlock everything on each board the guide has a quick section for that as well.
Aside from that if you're the type that must master everything it's worth looking at this section extensively to plan your own job mastery accordingly.
The guide then goes on to talk about the Espers before finally jumping into the walkthrough. The walkthrough is mostly the same walkthrough you got before, but it's been revised and its actually much better. In the original guide had a few gripes. While that walkthrough wasn't horrible it did sometimes neglect to tell you what was in a chest or not always provide all the maps it needed. It was also a lot flashier with a lot of unused space.
That's not all the case here. The walkthrough will call out differences when necessary and it's a lot cleaner in its layout and design. Each area begins by listing the items found in the area before listing the enemies found in the area.
A quick look at stats to prepare. Every area also has maps where all the items are called out and the walkthrough is written in an organized and clear format. The revision of the layout is the best part about it, though. Tables that show item lists are bigger and easier to see. The callouts in the walkthrough that are extra notes and tips are less distracting and the maps aren't on distracting backgrounds anymore. Also, there are tons of new chests in the game and the guide makes sure to point all of them out.
The only problem I have with the walkthrough and the guide as a whole, really is that there's no index to easily find yourself. There are plenty of side quests to do and the side quests have its own section. You'll be flipping there a lot, but it can be easy to lose where you are in the walkthrough as a result. An index or a ribbon bookmark would've been useful for this sort of thing, and for a guide as big as this it's surprising that neither exist.
After the walkthrough comes the sidequests which is also a far better organized section. In particular it's far more useful on hunts than the previous guide. In the sidequests section was perhaps the most annoying portion of the guide because it didn't feel like you were being helped in every way.
The original guide doesn't mention the Subterra in the Ridorana Cataracts for example, nor did it give yo a full map of the Great Crystals. Both of these issues are addressed here and fixed. Likewise maps for some of the optional areas are larger and more detailed. It's easier to use the maps to navigate some of the side areas now. You're getting a lot more out of this guide. The second dedicated to all of the games hunts is also much better as it's far more organized than previously and also manages to give some decent strategies and hints.
After the sidequests the guide goes into all the appendices.
It tells you about the weapons and lists the stats for each one. It's about as basic as it gets, but I will note that it's not a simple cut and paste job from the original guide as differences in the attack stats are noted and the new weapons and armor are listed here.
Then there's the bestiary which has a very similar layout as it previously did, but it's cleaner and less distracting to look at. But the meat and potatoes of the guide is the new trial mode. The guide gives you a full breakdown of trial mode, helping you prepare, telling you when a good time to go is and giving some helpful tips.
It divides each section by ten floors and provides an overall strategy. So floors has its own strategy etc. There is a final strategy for the very last trial.
I was actually surprised how much this covered. It wasn't a mere mention and a table, but actually a detailed look at what it's all about. In particular, it would've been nice if they'd listed some tips for New Game Minus, at the very least. Bestiary Size: In the guide, a massive page Bestiary chapter details invaluable information on how to deal with and, moreover, profit from every single one.
