Dark Force Rising Star Wars: Subjects Fiction Science Fiction Thriller. The dying Empire's most cunning and ruthless warlord, Grand Admiral Thrawn, has taken command of the remnants of the Imperial fleet and launched a massive campaign aimed at the New Republic's destruction.
Anyway it all ends on a Dark note because the practically beaten remnants of the Empire are a little less beaten. Well, there's not much makes up for this faux pas.
I don't particularly recognise the old charcters in Zahn's portrayal, they're just names with a shared history that he occasionally alludes to with a choice quote "never tell me the odds" said Han. Ohhhh Cheers Zahn. The newer characters are flat like pancakes that don't even have jam or honey on them. Which is ridiculous. Mara Jade bores me to tears.
Again, Zahn had the entire universe to fill with cool characters and he creates someone who wants to kill Luke Skywalker because he made her lose her job via killing the Emperor. As Emperor's Hand you'd think she'd expect this.
Or have a contingency plan. Or something. You'd think she'd be badass and kill Luke on a hilarious whim. But no, Zahn makes her an incessant whinger. He gave the readouts a quick check and tapped his comm switch, peripherally aware as he did so that Thrawn had likewise activated his own comm. Some private message to his spies in Hyllyard City?
It was typical—typical and disgustingly predictable. Reaching to the board in front of him, he keyed for local command frequency. Not that such futile gestures would do Karrde any good. Covell had directed literally hundreds of assault campaigns in his years of Imperial service, and he knew full well the awesome capabilities of the fighting machines under his command.
Good, but not perfect. The north-flank AT-AT and its support vehicles were lagging noticeably behind the rest of the armored noose. The Grand Admiral was right about one thing, at least: his troops were going to need a lot more battle seasoning before they would be up to real Imperial standards.
Still, the raw material was there. The energy sensor beeped a proximity warning: they were coming up on the encampment.
It was an impressive sight. From all four sides of the open area, in nearly perfect parade-ground unison, the other three AT-ATs appeared from the forest cover in the predawn gloom, the AT-STs and hoverscouts clustered around their feet quickly fanning out on all sides to encircle the darkened buildings. Covell gave the sensors a quick but thorough check.
