Download medical-site.info The Hotspot Project is a the culminating assignment for a series of activities about hotspots and plate motions. The activity series includes (in order): Relative . In this article we shall discuss the evidence for hotspots and what, if anything, they can Any current volcanic activity will be found at the young end of the ridge.
This can be done by considering the amino acid distribution at the corresponding positions in sequence homologs 20 , 21 , by using reduced sets of amino acids with either specific desired physicochemical properties or a balanced set of these properties 22 , 23 , or on the basis of the predicted effects of specific substitutions on the protein's properties 24 , Finally, an appropriate degenerate codon covering the specified set of amino acids must be selected for each targeted position.
Ideally, these codons should exhibit minimal amino acid bias and minimize the frequency of premature stop codons Several tools are available to facilitate this task and to calculate the size of the designed library Here, we present HotSpot Wizard 2.
Compared to its predecessor 28 , HotSpot Wizard 2. It implements four different established protein engineering strategies, enabling the user to selectively target sites affecting the protein's stability and catalytic properties. Users can easily select suitable substitutions for individual hot spots based on predictions of tolerated amino acids or amino acid distributions in sequence homologs, and suitable degenerate codons for these substitutions can be designed automatically via the HotSpot Wizard interface.
A new graphical user interface provides an intuitive and comprehensive overview of the results of the analysis, allowing users to think directly about the obtained designs. Each group, consisting of students, gets to study a seamount trail from around the world and needs to present 15 slides that each have 3 main points and one nice graphical illustration or image.
Allow the students to break into groups. Once the groups are established provide them with a seamount chain and associated hotspot to study. The presentation should be about 10 minutes long.
Instructions for the activity are on the Hotspot Activity Assignment Sheet which also includes places for each group to list out its members and the chain they have been assigned. Students use the Notes Sheet to help organize the information that will go into each slide in the presentation.
Once all the information is collected on this sheet the PowerPoint slides can be made. Material on this page is offered under a Creative Commons license unless otherwise noted below.

The goal of this lesson is for the students to formulate hypotheses based on evidence from Samoa and make predictions based on their hypotheses.
Lesson duration: The project requires three days to work in class and two days of presentations, but the students will have to do some work outside of class.
