The h follows the H to an island in Indonesia, where she takes a job as the secretary to the H. She portrayed herself as a middle aged spinster to get hired. The H eventually learns that she is not who she claims to be. That she is young and beautiful. He is an angry, lonely man, and they build a relationshi Location : Indonesian Island The H was maliciously blinded by a nurse that he ignored, but the h, also working in the same operating room with them, was accused of being the one to blind him. He is an angry, lonely man, and they build a relationship as they worked together so he proposes marriage and she accepts. Then he learns that she is accused of blinding him and he marries her anyway, but is exceedingly cruel to her. She blames herself in part for him being blind and accepts the punishment of his cruelty. This was such a poignant story. I also loved the beautifully, descriptive way the author made the location such a huge part of the story. The author made you feel like you were in Indonesia with the characters.

The H kinda treats her as a cross between the most seductive woman since Eve and a naughty kitten.

Even when the H's beautiful wanna be OW female cousin demands the h steal a jeweled fan which was the H's mum's, from the H's room and give it to her as payment to help the h to escape, the H doesn't really get all Mr. He questions the h pretty closely about who told her about the fan and about his mother, but the h stays silent about the wanna be OW who is definitely not acting in the h's best interests.

The worst thing the H actually does, besides the roofie kisses, is have a gold band with his contact info soldered around the h's ankle. This is to protect the h when she inevitably makes a break for it, as anyone in the desert who sees the anklet will know she belongs to the Bey and will return her "intact" so to speak. The H, who is the product of a French woman who became the wife of the H's father when her beloved French husband perished in an accident while they were sojourning through the area and then died when the H was 10 months old, also very kindly offers the h his mother's European clothing to be altered and fitted to the h.

Since the H has carefully preserved his mother's clothes along with her bejeweled fan since her death over 30 yrs earlier, it does seem significant that H lets the h wear and alter the clothing as the h just hates the female Middle Eastern mode of dress. He lets her pick a personal mount from his fine collection of Arabian horses and he takes her on a private journey into the desert the h loves. While out in the desert and after some more H and h debate, there is an assassination attempt on the H by a performing dancing girl who attempts to shoot the H but he kills her with a knife first.

The reason for the attack isn't revealed during the course of the story, tho the h assumes that there is some unrest over the H's rule. He took the Bey-ship by force and the wanna be OW cousin was the daughter of the former Bey and her brother fiercely resents the H's occupying his place by right of inheritance.

There is also the fact that the h is a foreign woman and very blonde and perhaps certain of the H's subjects aren't too pleased to see the H so enamored of such a woman. Especially since the h is the only occupant of the H's harem, and looks to be the only one for some time. After witnessing the near miss on the H, the h's feelings crystallize or the roofie kisses finally kick in, cause the h pretty much throws caution to the wind and the story ends.

This is where most reader's outrage kicks in. VW leaves it with the H and h having a long night of love and that is it. There is no proposal, there are no declarations of love and the h is fairly certain in her mind that when they return to the H's palace in the morning, he is going to kick her out - she feels she may be too much of a political liability for him to keep around.

Nothing is resolved, we don't know who tried to kill the H or what the wanna be OW is up to.

Also the H remarks as he and the h are getting ready to lurve it up that he did what he came to the desert to do, and there a LOT of ways to interpret that statement. I have a bit of a different view, I think VW did give us an HEA - but it is way more philosophical than what we are used to seeing from the lady who put the travelogue into HPlandia and gave us such vivid descriptions that we can feel the hot desert wind blowing sand into our hair. VW's last paragraph is as follows: They had no way of knowing, not beyond tonight and its passionate needs.

Tonight was only the beginning What VW is saying here, after giving us an h that fights harder for her freedom more than any other h she has given us before -even though she only has words to do it with- is that life and love and every thing else that matters has to be experienced in that moment, as it is, right at that instant.

No one knows the future and you have to live as if tomorrow will never come. It is only when you abandon yourself to that moment of bliss that you can really live or love and even if it is gone the next moment, you will never forget the experience. I think VW may have felt that a person may fight as hard as they can against circumstance, but they still can seize that one perfect moment for utter happiness and that doesn't make it invalid or negate the experience.

She has already given a ton of hints that this H is besotted with the h, he goes over and above what might be expected in the circumstance. He never harms her physically, and may have even saved her from worse by taking her to his home.

He gives her all kinds of things in efforts to please her, even to the point of letting her have his mother's treasured clothes - the H is not one to verbalize his undying devotion, most of VW's H's don't have that sorta emotional intelligence.

A Silken Barbarity

But his actions speak pretty loudly - it is the h we really have to be considering here. Overall, most readers dismiss VW's and most of HPlandia's h's as innocent duped doormats.

I disagree with that statement for most of VW's h's tho. They aren't wealthy, they may not be sophisticated, but not one of them hasn't been able to hold their own against an Alphabully H. They may tear their tongue to shreds doing it, but they manage to hold them off or tune them out, until the poor H's are practically begging for crumbs from the h's table by the end of the book.

This h was no different and she is only Who knows? Maybe she decided give a big night of romance a go for a change of pace - she can't be in any better place for it and the H is handsome guy. She may not wind up with him in the end - but at least she savored the experience and lived to the utmost in the moment. With this last book VW is telling us her version of Carpe Diem - seize the moment, she is saying - it may not come again and I can't help but wonder if that was a personal philosophy too.

And then there is that tantalizing last drift of a sentence "Tonight was only the beginning I give this story a big rating and I think everyone who travels to HPlandia should read it.

Violet Winspear Collection

Not only do we get an above average story, but we also get the opportunity to appreciate a woman whose work really established HPlandia as a permanent universe. Those of us who voyage there get the opportunity to bid a sad, fond farewell to a lady who never physically traveled far - but somehow took us and herself to other lands and places and made us feel as if we had lived the experience.

Farewell Violet Winspear - your stories will be treasured and we shall not see their like again. View all 7 comments. Jun 08, Vanessa rated it did not like it. Lorne finds out that her grandfather had offered her up to Razul al Kebir for some land. It got a bit tedious, her fighting him as he seemed to be a pretty romantic hero.

There is the requisite pot stir Lorne finds out that her grandfather had offered her up to Razul al Kebir for some land. There is the requisite pot stirrer in this book, but no satisfying ending for that particular spoon either. If there was, we the readers, are not privy to that information.

Lorne decided to accept what was on offer and leave things where they stood.

The Valdez Marriage

I suppose it was just a plot device to make Lorne realize where her feelings were going and more acceptable to Razul in the end. But Razul still had a bit of the chauvinistic attitude that permeates the earlier works of HP, yet he was excused because of the sitting of the story.

He did get what he came to the desert to gain though and anything else is left to your interpretation: May 24, Anuradha rated it liked it. Fair enough, I'd say the girl's demand is. After all, if you get abducted by a Sheikh in the middle of a desert, romance is obviously not the first thing on your mind. Even if he seems quite keen on it!

But he has had a head start with her. Her grandpa has promised her as a reward for waiving of some money to him, the desert state leader. And he is taken in by her virginal looks and chaste upbringing. Just to make the hero more palatable to western audiences, he gets a French mother!

Eastern men can be stylized and elegant and drool worthy too you know. Writers do not have to cloak them in part western colors to make them more acceptable!! Getting back to the story, the abductor feeds the girl, clothes her and takes care of her more like a guardian, post the death of her grand father. Just that he also imparts lessons in sensuality and sex from time to time.

She slowly converts from a hating, screaming virago to a yielding, loving sex buddy. No mention of eternal love, marriage, getting crowned as queen of sheikh land etc. Just a very simple acceptance of the hero as her lover, done consciously and joyfully.

Quite an adult, realistic approach to romantic fiction, would u say? Was a good read. Feb 28, Trenchologist rated it did not like it. It was pretty racist in broad strokes. It wasn't terrible with every character. This isn't really a pass. Under all his very subtle lack of doing much of anything, there seemed hinted he harbored noble intentions. Also he didn't set upon the heroine immediately or ever force her lol why is this a plus.

But he w -1 Given the date written, the hero, the plot trope, I had some expectation for content and theme and how it'd be handled. But he was dismissive and arrogant and superior in a chauvinistic Eastern Man! And half-European for good measure--the product of an unhappy union. The half-antecedent happens a lot in desert sheik books so far as I can tell not a trope I gravitate to, tho.

Thank god he's got some white in him! The heroine can be attracted to and love him after all! The heroine's assigned maid informs there's no other woman in the palace! And it's like that whenever he has a woman which is rare. This guy is a serial monogamist, what a relief. This after the heroine is set up as being an excellent rider and great shot, which comes to nothing.

The whole book comes to nothing. The leads barely interact. The conflicts breeze in and out of the desert palace. No one seems to make any actual decisions and there's zero future for them laid out. To be frank I have no idea why this book, as-is, was pubbed. I also don't know any reason why the couple will stay together in HEA. That's not necessarily a fault for a book, but it's a major flaw for a Romance. No one is in love in this book, and that's a big problem.

The ending is ambiguous, nothing is resolved, she gives in to her attraction to him and he? He desired her already and maybe will be nice to her until he's done with her. Even his gifts given along the way were offhand; not the offhand of a man desperately trying to hide his feelings but simply rote operation wrt someone who arouses him he's keeping around.

I interpreted the events leading to the end as him knowing she couldn't stay as his wife, and that she didn't want to--best case he treats her kindly and gently and teaches her more about the world and then bestows riches upon her and she goes to England and makes a good life for herself--but that's just not what I want out of a romance novel.

Not even an old skool racist trope desert sheik romance novel. So far I liked one of them. I have a few others in the big box of old skools so I might keep trying. She's definitely got some overwrought appeal, and there's some esoteric ideas going on between the lines. But when she misses for me, it's a big miss. This heroine was also raised in a convent, as was the heroine in the Winspear I finished right before. Is this some kind of thing for her? It figures; she likes a totally innocent, otherworldly heroine, and sticking them in a convent gives her that aplenty without having to explain further.
