She was never given an opportunity to do what she wanted, she only did what was expected of her. Open Preview See a Problem? But Maddie tells her daughter that everything is fine. I generally love anything Jennifer Crusie, but this book was painful and Jennnifer ended up not caring about any of the characters.

Convincingly realistic characters who are charming and hateful, lively and ghoulish, jennier and bad, populate this novel. Two thumbs up for a truly wonderful hero and a wonderfully true heroine. Happily, her daughter calls her on it. In between, you make deals.

Tell Me Lies by Jennifer Crusie

Instead of being able to just leave her husband, he disappears, there are rumors around town about her husband and his business, she is finding stock piles of cash all over, and her secret crush from high school just showed up and is determined she is going to be his this time. The reader knows they will marry. And in the meantime, there was chocolate. Recommended to any romance fan. Oct 27, Anita rated it it was amazing Shelves: Who is Brent sleeping with??

While not a mystery in the Romantic Suspense world, it IS a mystery, and one that Maddie must solve before it drives her crazy. Well, not that Maddie isn't already crazy. Even C. If you are looking for a change from the angst filled world of Romantic Suspense, read this book. It has comedy, romance and mystery who is Brent sleeping with, etc.

There is a great cast of suspects and any one of them could have done it.

S Who is Brent sleeping with?? Small town taboos are meant to be broken. It is fun and a great escape. And the general complacency of Maddie who hadn't been happy in her marriage for a while but was waiting for Brent to do something bad enough she could leave him for it.

Mind you, I don't live in a tiny town, and trying to be perfect the town's good girl sounds exhausting.

I loved Em as well as Henry and Anna. And C. And Maddie's grandmother was a hoot. Apr 02, Laura rated it it was ok Shelves: It did nothing for me. The aspect of 'small town' romances that I actually enjoy is usually the Cinderella story thing This book typified everything I dislike about small towns and small town fiction.

Tell Me Lies by Jennifer Crusie

It was claustrophobic and every single character hated it, but no one seemed willing to leave. I know I've always been a city girl and I haven't talked to hardly anyone I knew as a child in ages, but I couldn't understand why anyone s It did nothing for me. I know I've always been a city girl and I haven't talked to hardly anyone I knew as a child in ages, but I couldn't understand why anyone stayed there and dealt with that nonsense. CL was barely a character, he was nothing. I felt like the main character didn't like her daughter much which could have been kinda interesting but that got taken away quickly to boring and usual dynamics.

Nothing really wrong with the book, but not something for me at all. Apr 26, Kristin Marie rated it really liked it Shelves: I cannot say it enough, I love Jennifer Crusie. Her novels are fun and flirty. She creates dynamic characters both human and dog alike. It adds a new depth to the story line and keeps me turning page after page. Did I guess all of it? I did not. Thankfully so. I picked up a few more of her books at the local bookstore and I'm sure I will be reading more of her I cannot say it enough, I love Jennifer Crusie.

I picked up a few more of her books at the local bookstore and I'm sure I will be reading more of her work very soon! Happy Reading! It's an easy read.

I'm not really sure why it took me six days to read. Very unlike me. Apr 01, Rebecca rated it did not like it. Full of way too much stuff and random details and just too much filler. And DL is weirdly pushy and it isn't cute or romantic at all! It's creepy! And also, wth is up with the completely unnecessary Emily chapters?!

Trying to suck out some sympathy for Brent? Imo, they were completely extraneous. Aug 31, The Bookshelf Wars rated it it was amazing. Another wonderful novel from Jennifer Crusie. Like most of her other works, it explores being true to oneself, no matter your age or marital status. Two thumbs up for a truly wonderful hero and a wonderfully true heroine.

Feb 07, Kris Rafferty rated it really liked it. Mar 03, Golfmagic rated it it was ok. I'm going to give this 2. I'd give it higher if it wasn't Jennifer Crusie--I expect more from her. I sort of knew I wasn't going to love this book because it's one of her earlier ones. It was good, but not the best Crusie, imo. So the copyright date made me think I wasn't going to love it, but the beginning of the book is pretty darn good! One conflict stalled and the other dried up.

Here are my not-fav parts of this book: CL, the hero is too good. He has no faults, so he is boring. Oh, he does have one fault: But Maddie doesn't see it, not through any fault of her own, but because the reader is supposed to believe she's okay with it.

She protests at one point--ONE--toward the end of the book, but that conflict goes nowhere. In addition, CL's devotion to Maddie is actually kind of creepy. And his interest in her daughter read as kind of suspect to me.

I knew he wasn't supposed to be a bad guy--I knew this affection for her daughter was supposed to show how amazing he is, but, um, ew. I thought it should've raised some red flags for Maddie that this guy she hasn't seen in 20 years, who she never knew very well in the first place, said things like, view spoiler ["Em and I do just fine together" on the first day he spent any time with her!

I just didn't think he was hero-worthy hide spoiler ]. I hated that part. I skipped those scenes. Also, she's like a year-old in an 8-year-old's body. Anyway, I won't belabor the points, but Crusie has such better books than this one. I agree with other posters here who say this just doesn't live up to her charming characters and witty banter she can write. Mar 04, Karen Keyte rated it it was amazing Shelves: If there is one thing Maddie Faraday knows about small town living, it's this: Having lived in Frog Point, Ohio her entire life, Maddie figured there was hardly a secret in town that she didn't know.

Boy, was she wrong. It seems like there a still quite a few secrets out there and most of them concern her husband, Brent. It's a shock, of course, when Maddie finds the black lace crotchless panties shoved under the front seat of Brent's Cadillac. A shock but sadly, not surprising.

Afte If there is one thing Maddie Faraday knows about small town living, it's this: After all, Brent has cheated on her before. But this time Maddie decides she is not going to take it. As soon as she can figure out how to divorce Brent without hurting their eight-year-old daughter Emily, she's going to do it.

Maddie's got a plan, but she faces one or two complications. First of all, Brent claims someone must have planted those panties in his car as a joke - a hurtful, not very funny joke. Also her best friend Treva has been acting oddly secretive for the past week and she's not giving Maddie as much support as Maddie expected. The biggest complication by far, however, is C. Maddies hasn't seen him in twenty years, but she'll never forget the night she lost her virginity to him in a parked car on the Point.

Now C. The sexy romp has enough of a mystery to keep you guessing and a hero and heroine who really strike sparks. Sep 02, Jaime rated it liked it Shelves: This was my first Jennifer Crusie read, and I was pleased with it for the most part.

Having grown up in a town of people in a good year , I can relate. I also liked C. L This was my first Jennifer Crusie read, and I was pleased with it for the most part. I was a little iffy on her daughter, Emily, and questioned whether the scenes from her point of view were really necessary or just there to force us into some emotional connection with her. This meant I spent several chapters asking, "Is he dead yet?

I would have preferred to have that little tidbit held back, thank you very much. I adored this book. I loved C. They are such a wonderful couple. I did find her a bit stupid at the start, she was so obsessed about the town, about what other people thought about her, and she was so heavily influenced by her mother.

Tell Me Lies

But then as she started to break free, I began to like her more and more. She became someone I wanted to cheer for, someone who became important to me. In many ways I see how that kind of small town mentality could be so stifling for growth.

She was never given an opportunity to do what she wanted, she only did what was expected of her. But finally, she does find what she wants with C.

I just loved his attachment to Maddie, how he had always felt this strong sense of love for her. I just adored that. I've never lived in a small town, I've always moved not only city, but country, so don't have that kind of bond to a place and people.

But I was lured into wanting that kind of life because of this book.

Well written, but I just couldn't get into this book. It was ok and had some very descriptive sex scenes living up to the romance category it fits well into. I don't know, ok to read but wasn't amazing in my opinion.

Jan 23, Alice rated it really liked it Shelves: I would have proudly proclaimed that I'd never read a romance novel before in my life - and never imagined I ever would! In search of a new author, Cussler was suggested to me.

On the shelf right next to Cussler was Cruise I read the jacket and thought it sounded interesting. It was all of the above! It's been a long time since I sat up until Midnight to f I would have proudly proclaimed that I'd never read a romance novel before in my life - and never imagined I ever would!

It's been a long time since I sat up until Midnight to finish a book! OK, so it's not cerebral, it's not a literary masterpiece; but it's very well-written and it's just an easy, enteraining, FUN read!

I've fallen for Jennifer Cruise! I've become a Romance Novel fan!

I would've given it 5 Stars, but "Amazing" isn't exactly a rating I would give it! If you're like me, and never felt like Romance was quite your genre, give it a try! It's worth a good laugh Jun 06, Lady of the Lake rated it really liked it Shelves: A cheater of a husband who also embezzled..

I liked the feisty funny gran, in the home, I liked the handsome hunk boyfriend from high school Who had changed into a hard working decent man Oct 13, Chrissy Wissler rated it really liked it.

I was pulled into this book with the first sentence when Maddie finds a pair of black lace panties in the front seat of her husband's car. This book is an overall funny and enjoyable read with enough surprises and plot twists to keep it from feeling stale. The pacing is great - just when you think you know where the plot is going another clue pops up or someone turns up dead. Jennifer Crusie did a fantastic job creating characters you care about, from Maddie and C.

Each of them are believable; I easily found myself understanding why they acted in certain ways and why they simply kept going and didn't give up. A fun read, I'd recommend to anyone who wants a bit of light-humor with a twist of sass. Aug 14, Doug Willstead rated it it was amazing.

I finished this book in March I finished this book in April I finished this book September and again August I do read for entertainment. Man does J Cruise entertain! Active characters, confusing neighbors, bad guys and gals using each other to gain money or fame or some sort of satisfaction. I just finished a terribly bleak story and needed a pick me up. This author creates moments of sadness and stress.

Followed quickly by other moments of emotions not so hard to take. I never ge I finished this book in March I never get teary eyed because I'm a guy and we don't do that.
