Journey Planner. Sydney is Australia's largest city with a population of almost 4 million, and is the primary port of entry for international visitors. Most recently renowned as host city of the Olympic Games, Sydney is also the business and tourism hub of the nation, and is increasingly a major centre within the Asia-Pacific region. Blessed with a wonderful setting on Sydney Harbour, and a benign climate, Sydney is a great tourist's city. Although not the first point at which Europeans landed in Australia, it was the first permanent European settlement, and is Australia's oldest established city. Suburban Trains Sydney Trains, the Sydney metropolitan rail operator, provide frequent trains between Sydney and most suburbs over an intensive network of lines. Sydney trains are frequent and well-used, although they have a reputation, deserved or otherwise, of being a touch unreliable. Of particular interest is that the entire Sydney train network is operated by electric double-deck trains. Sydney Central station is a grand edifice somewhat in the style of European or North American grand terminal stations befitting its position as the departure point for some of Australia's great long-distance trains. In recent years it has been tastefully restored and is worth a look for anyone who appreciates fine architecture. Trams and Light Rail Sydney also possesses a re-born although embryonic tramway system called Sydney Light Rail that runs from Central Station into the inner west suburbs along a former railway line to Lilyfield and Dulwich Hill.

With an actual map that has most lines running horizontally East-West away from Central, these lines are ordinarily shown vertically North-South. Click to enlarge.

The new Sydney Trains map lacks much of the detail of the previous Cityrail map, such as locations of transport interchanges, accessible stations, park and ride facilities, etc, opting to go for a more streamlined map. But what about opting for something in the opposite direction? The following map, created by Bernie Ng, shows what the Sydney public transport network may look like by In addition, major bus routes, such as metrobuses and the 2 T-Ways radiating out from Parramatta are also displayed.

The rail network shows not only all the different lines that formed part of the old Cityrail network, but shows separate lines for different stopping patterns. The Illawarra Line out to Cronulla, for example, shows 2 lines, one for all stop services and another for express services. This is possible following the revised timetable, with its harmonised stopping patterns.

The third underground line is the Airport Line , which opened in , prior to the Sydney Olympics. The fourth underground line is the Epping to Chatswood rail link , opened in The line was intended to continue from Epping to Parramatta , incorporating the existing Carlingford line, but this section has been postponed indefinitely, though a stub tunnel has been constructed at the northern end of Epping station.

It will become part of the new Northwest with the Epping to Chatswood section converted from rail configuration to a rapid transit line. Disused tunnels[ edit ] Sydney has several disused tunnels. The best known of these are those leading out of St James station.

There are also several disused tunnels and platforms on the Eastern Suburbs line, which like St James station provided for the possibility of four tunnels even though only two are in use.

There is a stub tunnel at North Sydney railway station, north of platform 2, for a never constructed Manly to Mona Vale line. The associated never-used tunnels are quite complex.
