Chris grew up in Canada, which gave him the opportunity to get to know Huskies from an early age, though it wasn't until the early 80s that he acquired his first Siberian Husky. Caroline grew up with Keeshonds - her father's chosen breed. Showing Keeshonds, and then Siberians, led to judging. Caroline is a Championship show judge of both breeds and had the honour of judging Siberians at Crufts in Caroline is Kennel Club Secretary responsible for all matters of canine governance, including shows trials and awards, external affairs, the Library, and the Club itself. Racing and showing dogs are central to their lives, and Chris and Caroline currently share their home with 21 Siberian Huskies and four German Shepherds. Sheila and Simon Luxmoore own the very successful Zima kennels in Wales.

All this to say the book was another affirmation that those judgmental people who don't believe in dog breed differences especially leashes are not important to listen to and should be ignored at all costs if you want to keep your dog. Each breed has special traits bred into them through centuries of specialized breeding and should be treated accordingly.

A husky is a great escape artist and could run up to 15 miles on a whim. They may be experts at running off but they are typically no good at finding their way home again. So back to the book! This book is a must read for husky and husky mix owners. I especially liked their list of poisonous plants. The only negative thing I could think of was that they didn't mention urban mushing bikejoring and scooterjoring.

They do briefly mention bike rides with a dog being attached to the side but not urban mushing. I think this is a large omission on their part as a large portion of the nation doesn't get snow on a regular basis if at all to support mushing or skijoring and urban mushing is a major way to train and exercise your husky. Also many mushers use urban mushing in the off seasons to keep their dogs fit and trained for upcoming races in the snowy season.

So why the omission? I own two Siberians and grew up with the three my parents had before that. I work at a kennel so I have worked with many more Huskies and talked to their owners. I have read many resources on the breed as well. The title says "For Dummies" which to me would mean information on the breed, what to expect, and how to train, handle, and prepare for owning a Siberian Husky. Instead the author goes back and forth on owning a show Hu I did not find this book a very good read for a first time Husky owner.

Instead the author goes back and forth on owning a show Husky or just having a companion Husky. She discusses how to find a good breeder and what to look for in great detail, then throws in at the end a short description on potentially rescuing a purebred Siberian instead.

The author also talks about the genders in an attempt to help the reader choose which is better for them, but she discusses it in a way that the owner would not be spaying or neutering their Sibe and gives little details on the pros and cons to both keeping a dog intact or altering. Now it is not a bad book, but I would never suggest this book to someone considering getting a Siberian Husky. There are much better resources out there that focus on the breed and preparing the reader on what getting a Husky can entail.

Better options that explain the pros and cons of both breeders and rescues more along with comparing and contrasting altering or not altering any dog. Online research, joining Husky dedicated forums, talking to Husky owners, that is what I would suggest. Not just because i love huskies but it teaches you resposibility and how to care for a husky not every dog has the same needs.

For example huskies need to be excersised daily because they build up a lot of energy. If you have a husky or are thinking about getting one i would recommend this book. Books cover every popular dog and cat breed, bird varieties, hamsters and other small caged animals, fish varieties for aquarium hobbyists, terrarium pets, and even reptiles, amphibians, and exotics.

Each manual is individually written by an expert--a trainer, breeder, veterinarian, or other animal specialist. All books have color photos, and most also have instructive line illustrations.
