I myself inspected a substantial part of those constructions begun everywhere at the same time along an earthwork eighty-four leagues in length; it was my chance to try out on that carefully defined space running from coast to coast a system of defense which could afterward be applied anywhere else.

Memorie di Adriano; seguite dai Taccuini di appunti by Marguerite Yourcenar (1 star ratings)

Seriously, how do you make a huge project like building a wall sound so fucking boring? I should have known everything would be incredibly dull when he spoke of his mistresses without passion, his ascension as a "la-de-dah" affair, the death of Trajan as something that just sort of happened. I mean really. I understand that these are his memoirs; everything is in the past, and this is only a series of recollections. But have some feeling, man. Otherwise it's like reading a textbook -- worse, even, because it's only from one person's perspective -- and I could not care less about anything this Hadrian has to say.

He's not a real, fleshed-out person. He is just saying words.

Very unfortunate. It could have been so much more.

This was an academic biography dressed up as a fictionalized autobiography. I found it extremely hard-going and it has brought an end to my trek through novels about ancient Rome started with Robert Harris's excellent Cicero trilogy, continued with John Williams' Augustus, Robert Graves' I Claudius and Claudius the God and back to Robert Harris for Pompeii, which provided light relief between Graves and Youcenar.

I accidentally bought Graves' Count Belisarius on Kindle by pressing the 'download with one click' button while trying to scroll down the page to the description on my phone. After Memoirs of Hadrian, and having seen a copy in a book shop, I cannot face reading Count Belisarius which looks as turgid as Claudius the God despite being about a General and presumably including some action military or otherwise.

In Youcenar's favour, if you like that sort of thing, Memoirs of Hadrian was obviously deeply researched and endlessly thought out and re-written. I just find her thinking too hard to follow when trying to read before going to sleep at night. I found myself thinking 'what are you on about?

If she ever wrote anything else I won't be reading it. I enjoy learning new things through novels but only if they also entertain me. There was no dialogue and a lot of philosophizing in ways that were difficult to follow. If you are very academic and, preferably, a historian then you might be able to get into this book.

Otherwise leave well alone! Al fin. He tardado tanto en leerla como Marguerite en escribirla y Cortazar en traducirla. No hay personajes ni trama. View 2 comments. The first person perspective made me feel as if I was trapped on an endless phone call with someone who never let me interrupt his soliloquy and ask clarifying questions. There was a lot of surface and not much detail. When I read historical fiction, I like to learn about the historic period in question. Hadrian's endless blathering meant that I got a glimpse into things I might find interesting, but there was never any follow up on those I did not like this, Sam I Am, I did not like Hade-re-an.

Hadrian's endless blathering meant that I got a glimpse into things I might find interesting, but there was never any follow up on those things. The book club member who chose the book began by apologizing for choosing it, because, though it is his desert island book, it is not a "book-club" kind of book, not being very linear. I read this because of a book group I'm thinking of joining. The reviews on goodreads are stellar, and every reference to it that I found describes it as Yourcenar's masterpiece.

But I found it very dull. It's written as a letter to Hadrian's successor, Marcus Aurelius. It's full of details about politics, philosophy, and religion, but very thin on anything personal, such as motivations.

We know that Hadrian really disliked his wife, but not much about why, aside from his calling her cold and ha I read this because of a book group I'm thinking of joining. We know that Hadrian really disliked his wife, but not much about why, aside from his calling her cold and harsh.

We learn that he fell madly in love with a young boy like about 13 or 14 -- ew , but we never get inside Hadrian's head, much less learn why Antinous drowned.

I tried. I really tried. But the haul was too long for me. I know virtually nothing about Roman or ancient history, something which I see as a fault. So the novel had an initial appeal. However, this book, stylistically perfect though it may be, is not going to enhance my knowledge, as it was clearly over my head.

To enjoy this book, you either need to have a very sound knowledge of Roman history or be a more philosophically minded, obviously more sophisticated reader than I am.

Reading this boo I tried. I don't doubt the book's accomplishments, and I really tried to get something out of it, but it was pointless, and so I stopped reading, literally mid-sentence, somewhere around page Odio quella sensazione di disfatta e rinuncia Questo romanzo non fa per me. NOIA mortale.

With all the excellent reviews on GoodReads and all the hype surrounding this novel, I was awfully disappointed. I can see why it has gotten praise, but have yet to see really what makes this a great novel besides the prose and the research that was involved.

Lo lessi al liceo e a questa recensione negativa ha contribuito sicuramente l'imposizione da parte dell'insegnante. I really hoped this book would be like I, Claudius by Robert Graves. That book is the reason I got a degree in Classical Civilizations. I got about 50 pages in, then flipped through random pages further in to see if the book still continued to be awful.

It was the ramblings of a man trying to be too philosophical. He seems to digress A lot. Just when a narrative would start I rarely give up on a book, especially one so highly rated, but I just coul I really hoped this book would be like I, Claudius by Robert Graves. I rarely give up on a book, especially one so highly rated, but I just couldn't enjoy it and didn't want to waste any more of my time.

I have to say that in my opinion it is boring, I prefer other Roman emperors stories, but this book is a well known novel I have to differ a little bit from the public opinion.

Couldn't find my way into it - and am thus surprised of the very good ratings it received here on goodreads Maybe I should try it again sometime.
