Public relations is crucial to the success of every business, big or small. These days there are lots of ways for small businesses to manage their own PR. For starters, social media—that great equalizer —has made it easier for small businesses to get the attention of editors and reporters. And most journalists are happier making contact directly with a potential source, rather than having to go through an agency or publicist first. Another plus? The expanding and evolving definition of media. No longer is media limited to traditional news outlets. Now there are a plethora of influential bloggers, YouTube influencers, online publications and podcasts that can be harnessed to help publicize your business. Craft a compelling story or two. And the way you do that is with good, old-fashioned storytelling. Topics like that offer an enterprising reporter the opportunity to report on something truly new or of human interest.

Social media is not the place for sales promotion, either. This is especially true for the large number of Millennials using social media, who look for honest, transparent social media discourse and sneer at material that smacks of overt promotion.

The best way of promoting your ideas is to stay away from obvious promotion. The next step is selecting the right media to approach, as well as the best social media channels to use. That requires understanding what styles and types of content are appropriate for each media outlet and channel, as well as knowing whom to approach in the media and which of the many social media channels will be most effective.

The writing and self-publishing of novels becomes much more bearable with this guide well learned. No doubt, Mark Coker returns to share his knowledge and experiences that are priceless. Thank you, Mark. It will take a while, but I'll be chipping away at trying these. First I have to publish my ebook.

I'm the type of person who will much rather do the marketing of the book, than formatting the fonts and margins. Lots to take in and try out for yourself. It's full of fantastic information, and the author was wonderful to add links to almost everything he recommended. If you are a more experienced marketer in the publishing world, this book may offer links to websites and services that you may not be familiar with. Many of them have already worked for me and my book is finally getting out there! Another must-read for indie authors. I'm only giving it 4-stars because it's a bit dated. This needs to be updated every 6 months at least bc of all the changes with the internet. Even though I only give it 4-stars still highly recommended. Use a cloud storage service like Dropbox to store PDF versions of your kit, as well as several high-resolution images. Every time you pitch a story about your company—or yourself as an expert—include a link to the media kit. A quick one-pager like the sample below will give editors all the information they need to know at a glance.
