Why can't there be stories that are closer to the Pakistani woman of today — stories that we can identify with, rather than those that do not even interest our grandmothers anymore? All I can say in response is I am not sure who is to blame here, the solution expert or the people posing such questions.
If there are actual people out there who genuinely believe that the writer can accurately predict the events in their lives, then rest in peace reason. All this superstition needs to go. Are we really still stuck on that point? There is so much more to us Pakistani women than fair and dark skin. The magazine needs to consider what to publish here - diversity, and more pressing health issues need to be given space.
Pakistan is developing sea-based missiles and expanding its interest in tactical nuclear warheads. Can the leading Urdu magazine also aim to improve its print quality? Sad zodiacs Zodiac signs are one of those less harmful, somewhat forgivable superstitions that magazine readers all over the world are still interested in, for fun, if nothing else.
How about something else for a change? How about the odds of getting your college funding, or a reunion with old friends or perhaps an imminent adventure? Truth shall be told Female celebrities are the butt of jokes for their fake ages pretty much everywhere. But make no mistake, Akhbar-e-Jehan reveals the true age of all women.
Tweak the title There is this one section that delivers important information that I believe every Pakistani woman needs to be aware of. There's a magazine called Cosmopolitan in the US which has been published for at least 30, and may be more years.
Supposedly it is for the liberal free woman who has control over her life.
In reality it is for the somewhat desperate single woman secretary in her thirties. I read it while waiting in grocery store lines. This magazine has not changed in thirty years or more. The topics are invariably the same! It is good to educate people form these kind of superstitions which are taking our nation nowhere, and in fact we are wasting precious time and loosing progress.
Akhbar-e-Jahan has been a compulsary item 'like part of weekly grocery' for a Pakistani home. It stil covers big audience. People still follow it, maybe because it is the only national magazine which is still the same with the same 'Gharelu Desi essence': The perception of the author about the socio-economical situation of women in Pakistan is not entirely correct.
Although, the conditions of women has improved, however this is limited to urban and economically well-off classes.
On the other hand, majority of the women from rural and poor background still faces the same problems and probably Akhar--e-jahan is the only magazine that represent the deplorable state of such women. The social issues highlighted here, are generally true and unfantacized narrative of events and perhaps are more appealing to the audience with rich experience of life and deep understanding of society. Lovely article.
Took me back some time in 90s and then I realized that this satire was actually perfect.
Lol, there were so many things in Akhbar e Jahan that I used to think about as to what is the sense of putting them there.
Although author forgot to mention the similar stories every month of that One Prince who had to go on hunting in every Children's corner. The villages and small towns do have the true stories as " teen auratain teen Kahaniyaan".
Sumit Mazumdar oh come on! Cosmopolitan is published globally and do not have these lousy topics which akhbar-e-Jahan has. Respect cosmopolitan!
I don't agree about ur perception of dreams. Dreams do have an impact on our lives. You would believe this if you are muslim. Thank you for the piece. Love it.
Akhbar-e-Jahan was the go-to magazine for all things - and I used to religiously follow the stories of 'Teen Aurtain Teen Kahaniyaan' which actually were not fictional - they came with a disclaimer that they were true, which made them fascinating lessons. This was during Zia's period so jeans and brother-sister duo I don't think the magazine ever featured a man on the cover before or since , it was cool.
Thanks for the memories Akhbar-e-Jahan! And Rakhshinda! There are not many Canadian-Pakistanis who can get Akhbar-e-Jahan here. An on-line version of this magazine could help. No wonder mumani dear loved this Urdu risala which we never understood why until now Akhbar e Jahan is a popular magazine. When majority of people are under educated , you cant expect them to read Times, Newsweek, Herald , Newsline and Readers Digest or Vogue.
There are vast majority who is getting educated , informed and entertained by this magazine. So no harm in it. Now even our state channel has an 'Istikhara expert' who predicts success of marriage in less than a minute by asking the girl's and guy's mothers names. I wonder how does the expert even make it to live television in the morning show, and why aren't the Ulema giving a fatwa against these 'experts' for this unislamic istikhara.

From an avid reader: Facebook Count. Twitter Share. From an avid reader, here is a list of editorial decisions Akhbar-e-Jehan needs to address: Old, not really gold This used to be the ladies' favourite section, stuffed with fictional stories of a woman standing up against a villainous mother-in-law, or stories of two sisters who cannot stand each other.

Urdu on the internet Criticism aside, Akhbar-e-Jehan is still loved, and loved by many. I just fear it may fade away now.
