What I found interesting is how he goes about doing that. Grover seems to favor methods like holds and pumps long, slow concentric phase.
It makes sense that for athletic longevity you would avoid too much explosive and plyometric training. Although it makes sense, it is not commonplace to find athletes doing much holds and pumps. It is much more common to find athletes doing an excessive amount of jump training, to the detriment of their actual explosiveness.

I finished reading Relentless yesterday, and then read through this one at one sitting with many breaks in between to just think. I recommend that anyone who reads this read relentless first to better understand the mindset that Tim Grover is talking about. Once you read that book, you'll understand and appreciate the advice in this book far better. I also recommend that you read this book from start to finish, taking notes as you go along and highlighting this sentences tha Can be life changing!

Understanding the overall message first is important especially chapters 8 and 9. Re read the book if you can for the philosophy to better imprint itself. Then follow the exercise schedule as instructed.

I did it but vertical didn't increase as much as hyped at all. One reason may be probably because the pictures and instructions for the workouts need to be to the T.
And sometimes it's like ahhh, I'm an athlete but not an olympic athlete trainer; all the work outs are specific, wi I did it but vertical didn't increase as much as hyped at all. There are a LOT of people trying to increase people's vertical jump. However, Grover's goal is quite different. Grover completely understands and explains this. Tim also stresses the importance of the hips in athleticism — I know from first hand experience how important having loose, full-range-of-motion hips are for an athlete. The guy knows his stuff. In fact, it was just the opposite; playing a sport actually breaks down the muscle. So we went the other way and worked on building up the muscles that have a tendency to break down over the course of a long season. We also began sequencing his exercises to get the most out of every muscle, every time. We focused on preexhausting the targeted muscle, loosening the joints, combining exercises to teach the muscles how to fire correctly, stretching the muscles and joints immediately after so they''d be ready for the next set.
While most programs were targeting the major muscle groups, we were also emphasizing the smaller muscles, the neutralizers and stabilizers, so everything was working together. And we definitely got people talking when they heard MJ was lifting on game days, which was basically unheard of at that time but made perfect sense to us. Look at the schedule: If you take off every game day, that''s a whole lot of days you''re not working those muscles properly.
For us, not acceptable.
So we stayed with our workout schedule regardless of the game schedule. It became part of his game preparation; just like you eat a certain way on game day, you train a certain way on game day.
